Step 1: Choose the Right Spot

Before you touch a hammer or level, you need to choose the best place for your canvas.

  • Lighting: Place your canvas where it receives enough natural or ambient light, but avoid direct sunlight which can fade colors over time.
  • Eye Level Rule: A good rule of thumb is to hang the center of the canvas at eye level—typically 57 to 60 inches from the floor.
  • Grouping Tip: If part of a gallery wall, plan your layout in advance using paper cutouts or a design app.

Step 2: Understand Your Canvas Type

Not all canvases are made the same. The hanging method may vary depending on the size and construction of your piece.

  • Medium to Large Canvases: These require sawtooth hangers, D-rings, or picture wire.

Step 4: Use the Right Hanging Method

Let’s break down the most common ways to hang a canvas print.

  • Sawtooth Hangers:  Perfect for small to medium prints. Center the hanger on the back of the frame, and use a nail or hook to anchor it.
  • D-Rings and Picture Wire:  Secure D-rings on either side of the frame and attach picture wire. Great for larger canvases, it allows for flexible leveling.
  • J-Hooks:  For very large or heavy pieces. These provide added support and are easy to install.
  • Adhesive Strips:  Best for lightweight prints and renters. Be sure the surface is clean and dry.

Step 5: Mark, Measure, and Install

Follow these tips for precision:

  • Remember, canvas prints should be hung so middle of image is at eye height.
  • Measure from floor to area on wall where middle of canvas will reside and mark with a slight pencil mark.
  • If centering on a wall determine width of your canvas print then measure width of wall and make a slight pencil mark where the measurement is about half of the width of the wall.
  • Your two marks for the height and width should be close to one another.  If not remasure form step 2 and place mark near center mark you made in step 3.
  • Install your mail or hanger where these two points meet.  Larger canvas prints may require two hangers to ensure the weight is distributed.  In this instance instead of placing a hanger in the center you'll want to locate the halfway point from the edge of the print to the center and mark it on ech side.  This will place the hangers eqidistant to distrubute the weight.
  • Hang you canvas print then utilize your level to ensure it is hanging straight.

Maintenance & Longevity

To keep your canvas looking great for years:

  • Dust regularly using a soft, dry cloth.
  • Avoid moisture or chemical cleaners.
  • Re-level periodically if the canvas shifts.
